I took up Pilates back in England and honestly it's fairly similar to yoga. They're both about connecting the mind and body and uses the body as resistance. Only difference with yoga is, there is a spiritual element to it — one which I purposely ignore because I've my 5 daily prayers for that. I'm into yoga purely for fitness reasons.
So about a little over a month ago, my aunt kindly agreed to give me one-on-one yoga sessions after I asked her. I woke up the morning after my first yoga session feeling like I just went through boot camp. Every single muscle was sore. Heck, I didn't even know there were so many muscles in the human body!
My shoulders. The bit around the back of my neck. My waist. My hips. My BUTT. I used to go to the gym for hours at a time and I was never THIS sore. There's something really satisfying about waking up with an aching body the morning after a workout.
I practise yoga nearly everyday now for at LEAST 45 minutes and I'm always red and sweaty at the end of it. I never intended to take up yoga to lose weight; I just wanted to do something other than running on my treadmill and using weights. 1 month down the road and I've lost nearly an inch off my waist. Even my aunt told me I'm more toned and slimmer now.
Best part about yoga is you don't need to leave your house for it. All you need is a yoga mat and your body becomes your gym. I saw increased flexibility in my body within 3 weeks — me too! I used to slouch sooo much and now even my posture has improved.
Some of the poses which I found difficult initially became easier the week after. I seriously recommend other women out there to take up yoga especially to very busy women. It will change your life — you'll thank me later!
