Today, I did something the younger me absolutely hated and loved it. I went hiking.
Hiking was made thoroughly enjoyable with the company of my aunt and cousin.
I woke up before 7am for this early morning hike. Miracles do happen!
It's odd how the things I love doing now, I absolutely loathed back in my school days. But perhaps I didn't like it back then because it was one of those annoying compulsory school activities the teachers made us do to learn about nature. Let's be honest, we all went along with it because it beats being in the classroom! The younger (and tubbier) me didn't understand why you couldn't just watch a documentary on it. The last time I trekked through a Malaysian jungle, I was 17 and I recall struggling so much so I had this image of being left behind my aunt and cousin but I couldn't be more wrong. Haha.
My stamina has improved so much since I began running regularly last September.
There was a time when I much preferred exercising indoors and I'd only enter the gym during times I knew it'd be completely empty. I preferred working out alone so that people wouldn't see me. But somehow ages 19 onwards, I became a lot more comfortable doing things with people. Yes, I used to be quite shy and awkward. I'm a lot better now and I've to credit my besties in uni for getting me out of my shell.
I've been really good at trying out new things this year and it's been such a wonderful experience getting to know my strengths and improving my weaknesses. I missed out on a LOT during my teen years because I was painfully uncomfortable trying out new things.
Now that I've passed my teens, I've realised how important it is to enjoy one's youth especially while we still have the strength. This beautiful hadith comes to mind:
The prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said: ❝ Take advantage of five before five: Your youth before your old age, your health before your sickness, your wealth before your poverty, your free time before you're preoccupied and your life before your death. ❞ (Narrated by Ibn Abbas and reported by Al Hakim)
Whatever you've today however much or however little; ENJOY IT. Take advantage of it. With a few friends and a big imagination; the possibilities are endless.
